Everything about garage flooring

Traditionally, most garage floors are just plain gray concrete. Though this is effective, it is not the best way to go. If you like the basic cement gray, you should at least consider a sealant to protect the surface from unsightly oil or paint stains.

When researching garage flooring ideas there will be many important questions to ask. Some of the most important things to know include how much it will cost, will it stand up to the use it will receive, and will you be able to install it on your own. Nowadays garages have become more like multi-purpose rooms. In addition to parking your cars, you also need space to store things such as seasonal decorations, sporting equipment, and craft supplies. Often garages are also used as a workshop and mechanic shop.

To make the garage a more functional space people are adding all sorts of accessories including shelving, cabinets, electrical outlets, and lighting. One way to really make this space function better is to improve the floor. When it comes to garage flooring there will be many different options to consider. Each of them will enhance both the appearance and functionality of this important space.

Types of Garage Flooring

One of the least expensive and easiest ways to improve the appearance of your garage floor is to paint it. When selecting paint you need to keep in mind that your garage floor will most likely see all kinds of abuse, such as chemical spills, heat, moisture, and abrasion. Regular concrete paint will quickly start to peel and erode. The paint you select needs to be able to bond completely with the concrete and be scratch resistant. Painting your garage floor will require that you thoroughly prep the floor, repairing any cracks or damage before you start.

If all that sounds like a lot of work you may want to consider installing mats or carpet in your garage. These mats are easy to clean and great to cover up older garage floors which may be cracked or stained. They allow you to cover the existing floor without making any repairs first.

Another easy to install option is interlocking plastic mats. These large squares have notched edges that fit together like puzzle pieces. One of the advantages of this type of garage flooring is that you can replace individual pieces if they become damaged or stained. They are available in a wide selection of colors and can stand up to just about any spill or stain. There is no need to prep the floor before installation, just snap the pieces together and you are finished.

One of the most expensive options for garage flooring is installing ceramic tile. This is a job that is usually best to let a professional handle. They will need to install a commercial grade tile which can stand up to the conditions your garage is likely to encounter. Ceramic tile garage floors are almost completely maintenance free, so they will look great for many years to come.
